Minister sees no point in delaying data retention law by 5 years

NOVO-OGARYOVO, Moscow Region, Jul 5 (PRIME) -- It would be unwise to delay coming into force of the data retention law until 2023 from 2018, Russian Communications and Mass Media Minister Nikolai Nikiforov said on Wednesday.

“It’s true that several deputies made such a suggestion, and the bill on the delay of the law until 2023 has been submitted to the government. Our ministry prepared an opinion about the bill, and we thought that putting it off until 2023 as a direct rule is not reasonable, and we supported the law taking effect on July 1, 2018,” Nikiforov told reporters.

“However, we offered to provide the government with additional powers to approve a detailed plan of implementing the measure. It does not come into force simultaneously across the country on July 1, 2018.

“Consultations and meetings are being held at the government, and I think we’ll see an agreed position next week.”

Under the law, connection operators and Internet services must store all phone talks, text messages, sounds, video recordings, and other electronic messages of users for six months.
